SPORTS
RELIEF – Friday 19th March
All pupils are invited to wear PE/Games
kit, or similar for the day, along with funky socks!
Silver coin donations please – all proceeds will go
to the national fundraising campaign.
COCO’S AFRICA
As you will know, our efforts for this
fundraising day were somewhat disrupted by the
snow! We intend to run this charity day on Thursday April
1st, in order to support this
immensely worthwhile cause. In case you have forgotten, the
whole school received an assembly led by 4 young trainees
from ‘Coco’s’, with their managers, Chris
and Debs –
some of you may know them! Their message was incredibly powerful
and their task
simple – Chris and Debs are in the process of raising
£8000+ to take the trainees to
Mozambique in May 2010 to work with youngsters in orphanages
and schools –
teaching English and Life Skills, and they need our support.
We are very proud to be
associated with such Global Citizenship and, indeed, it is
an area that Ofsted highlighted
as something SJS could continue to develop further. On this
day we will be holding a
non-school uniform day, for silver coin ‘payments’
– all monies raised will go to supporting
this immensely worthwhile venture. All pupils and staff are
being encouraged to join in,
wear non-uniform and to get involved! It would be my hope
that we can then develop links
with such pupils in Mozambique and really develop in our children
a sense of community
that is local, national, international and global.
ASC SUPPORT PARENTS’ GROUP
Our next meeting is on 24th March at
6.00pm – it is likely that we will be joined by families
from within our West Horsham network who are unable to access
this kind of support
nearer home – it would be great if as many of you who
can do attend in order that the
vast differences of living with children diagnosed with ASD/ASC
can be shared.
POLITE PARKING
Please can I request that anybody who
has previously parked directly opposite the school,
in the private entrance to the farm, refrains from doing so,
from today? I am aware that,
as a school, we are not responsible for this, but am concerned
that pupils, families and cars
are at risk at many times during the day. We will accept no
liability for any injuries caused
as a result of this and indeed often find it difficult to
defend families who have parked there inconsiderately, or
indeed who have behaved aggressively towards the owners of
the
farm. I have advised the owners to contact the police if further
incidents occur.
VALUES IN SCHOOL
The values we will be exploring over
the next academic year are appreciation, caring,
co-operation, courage, diversity, freedom, friendship, happiness,
honesty, hope,
humility, love, patience, peace, quality, respect, responsibility,
rights, simplicity,
thoughtfulness, time, tolerance, trust, understanding and
unity. This week we explored
the value ‘honesty’. Pupils and staff were asked
to ‘recognise’ honesty in each other and
share these examples with all.
SADS
production of 'An Alien Stole My Skateboard'
is at the Village Hall on Friday 12th and
Saturday 13th March. Children from the local schools, Nicky
Fuller and Sam Lanning
all star in this! Tickets are available from Stems, Lintot
Square.
LET’S GET COOKING!
Cooking club begins next week –
4th March for Group 1, Group 2 will begin again on
18th March and Group 3 on 25th March. As requested previously
please ensure all club
members come to school on their club day with an apron and
a named Tupperware
(or equivalent) container. Pupils without an apron will no
longer be able to attend.
PE KIT
Another reminder, please, that it is
a school rule, and part of our Partnership Agreement
that all pupils change for both indoor and outdoor PE/Games.
Please ensure the correct
kit is brought into school each Monday and taken home each
Friday. We no longer keep
spare kit in school and recently several pupils have been
unable to participate in several lessons.

WITH
THANKS
…to all of you who have
offered to help us with tonight’s fund-raising
discos. Your support
is much appreciated.
Y5/6 Football
On Thursday the Year 5/6 football
team took part in a magnificent match, against
St. Mary’s, which saw them have countless scoring
chances. The team’s skill and
collaboration skills saw them narrowly miss out on
a game they deserved to win.
Final score – Southwater 1, St. Mary’s
3. Well done boys!
THE 3 C’s
Over the last couple of weeks
all pupils, and members of staff, have been ‘living
and
breathing’ our communication, consideration
and co-operation ‘charter’. Pupils (and
staff)
were challenged to receive acknowledgement of these
by others within our school
community. Last week we had 956 instances of these
observed in school – amazing!
I will update you, as I can, with how well we are
doing.

BOX TOPS FOR BOOKS!
Please can we ask that the tokens
are returned to school as soon as the contents of
the cereal box have been consumed! Thanks.
3 C’s in the Community!
Please can I ask that if you
have any comments, compliments or complaints that
these
are forwarded to the school as soon as possible. We
are committed, as a professional
learning community, to continually reflecting on our
practice and will endeavour to resolve
any concerns or worries you may have as quickly as
we can. I would also request that
‘rumour’ or ‘gossip’ be challenged
by you all, and that if you feel you want further
information about something you may have heard, that
may concern you directly,
that you contact me immediately. Time will always
be made for open, honest and
transparent discussion.

after half-term – please ensure all club members

DAD – WHAT’S FOR DINNER?!
There is an opportunity for
‘Dads and their children’ to share in
a unique ‘culinary experience’
at Southwater. The ‘Cooking Bus’ is at
our school from February 22nd – 25th and during
the
day will host sessions to be attended by pupils and
staff from our three village schools. If
you would be interested in attending an evening session
on Tuesday or Wednesday,
please forward your details to me, as soon as you
can. Families from both schools are
welcome to register their interest. There are only
32 spaces, in total, available for this
– get in quick!
WORLDS APART
Pupils in Year 6, yesterday
and today, got to work with, and meet, Robert Scott
an
Egyptologist, and today were joined by 50 Year 5 pupils
to meet and question Dr Simon
Morley, a marine biologist from the British Antarctic
Survey expedition team. If your
children were involved, please ask them about these
inspirational sessions.
DON’T FORGET…
Discos tonight - at the times
previously advertised. We look forward to seeing as
many
pupils as possible joining us.

Science Evenings
At
the beginning of November, two Science Evenings were held for
pupils and their parents enabling them to take part in a variety
of 'hands-on' experiments.
Forty pupils and parents attended each evening, with 20 practical
and fun science experiments for them to try, either on their
own or in teams. The experiments included ' How to get a hard
boiled egg into a bottle without pushing?', 'Can you eat upside
down?' and 'Can you make plastic using vinegar and milk?'.
Although at times 'messy', the events proved to be great fun,
and were full of excitement with the most frequently heard comment
of the evening being 'Brilliant!'
The
'Bug Show'
Fifty
pupils and their parents
were privileged to be able to spend an evening with Lee Gibbs
being introduced to and having the opportunity to become more
familiar with his collection of bugs.
This fascinating selection included Giant Land Snails, Tarantula
spiders, Giant Millipedes and Giant Cockroaches and Lee explained
about each of the creatures, as well as dispensing a host of
interesting facts. Everyone had the opportunity to hold, stroke
or just look at the bugs - earning themselves a sticker if they
were courageous enough to touch them. For the really adventurous,
there was even the chance to partake in a 'cooked caterpillar'
tasting session!
The event was exciting and fun, and the confidence of the pupils
and their parents to touch and handle the creatures grew throughout
the evening - some even becoming quite fond of their new found
'friends'.
Healthy
Schools' Week Activity Morning
At
the beginning of June, children and staff arrived early at school
to take part in the activity mornings. A variety of sporting
and fun activities were arranged and children and staff were
able to join in whatever activity took their fancy, ranging
from cricket, tennis, rounders, dance, aerobics and parachute
games. The event was very popular and enjoyed by all.

We
also had a 'Walk to School' day where pupils and teachers were
encouraged to leave their cars at home and walk or cycle to
school. Again the response was phenomenal - as you can see,
the staff car park was empty! The local community police also
supported the event and were on hand to security mark t bikes
brought into school if the owners wished.

Tudor
Day

A
memorable time was enjoyed by staff and pupils when they revisited
the Tudor era for a day.
Dressed in period costumes they were able to take part in
Shakespearian drama, sketch Tudor artefacts, learn about and
do their own brass rubbings and hear about Tudor life from
a visiting ‘Tudor Apothecary’
‘On
Tudor day I liked dressing up in my Tudor costume and walking
around in a long dress. I liked seeing Mr. Wisdom the Apothecary
drink that terrible drink. He also told a great story.’
Elisha.
'On
Tudor day we all dressed up in amazing colours and shapes.
Our costumes were glittery, plain or dull. We went into the
hall where we learnt how to do brass rubbings. They were Medieval
and Tudor rubbings. Most of them were praying for better hopes
to get to Heaven. We did much smaller ones than the ones we
saw. They were fun to do and exciting. Later we did drama
and learnt about the Tudor theatre. We were the three witches
from MacBeth casting an evil spell!' Annie.
Swimming
‘At
swimming lessons we learn to swim. It’s awfully cold
when we get in. We do one stroke of breast stroke then we
do front crawl and some backstroke and then we’ve done
them all. We do some fun activities and then we go splish,
splosh. When we get back to the coach we sit beside our friends
and go back to school and wait for Friday again.’ Rhiannon.

Year5
Healthlinks
with Horsham Leisure Link

Last
year each
Year 5 class was visited by Horsham Leisure Link for a ‘fitness
fun day, a practical workshop and a fruit tasting day.
Our general fitness was measured with various tests including
‘sit & reach test’, a ‘grip test’
and a ‘standing long jump test’. Finally we had
a ‘bleep test’ which measured the fitness of our
heart and lungs. Finally we were treated to fruit tasting
and we tried 3 different fruits; custard apples, grapefruits
and even dragon fruit. They had very unusual but nice tastes.
It was a great day and everyone had fun and enjoyed it.
Thank you very much Horsham Leisure Link!
Craig (on behalf of Year 5)
Healthy
Lunchbox parents workshop

‘First
we made a Spanish omelette and left it to go cold. Then we
looked at lots of different foods. We all had to pick an unhealthy
food and read the ingredients so that we could tell the group
what we thought about this. Next we tasted a selection of
fruit and vegetables to see what they tasted like. After that
the chef made some healthy sandwiches and we were allowed
to try them. Lastly we were given some recipe cards. Just
before we left we tried the Spanish omelette—it was
lovely.’

Year6
Newhaven
Fort

Newhaven
Fort was very exciting and informative. The Blitz experience
really got you into the action. I’m sure that that was
everyone's highlight of the trip. Most people were glad that
they weren’t cooped up in a small museum when we went
up onto the cliffs to see the gun emplacements. It was a great
day out and everyone enjoyed it.
'The
best school trip so far!' James
'I
really liked the 'Blitz Experience' - it felt like it was
a real air raid' Robert
'The
ramparts and the tunnels were fascinating and you could touch
all of the guns' Craig
'I felt like
I had gone back in time' Alice
Cycling
Proficiency

'Cycling
Proficiency was great fun and we all got the opportunity to
go out into the fresh air. Not many people thought of it as
learning though! Most passed with flying colours although
it was a pity the weather was so cold during that particular
week'.
African
Dance

For
two days we invited into school 'World Muzic Makers' to teach
us about Afrikan song, dance and drumming. All of the children
spent time with the Afrikan teacher, Millicent, learning the
songs, their meanings, dance and drumming rhythms. At the
end of the two days a performance was given by the Year 6
pupils to the rest of the school.
'It was really
good because the lady really knew what she was doing' Katie
'She got everyone
really involved' Craig
'She intereacted
really well with the children and taught us Afrikan songs,
she also had a good sense of humour' Danni
Junior
Citizens

Yet another opportunity
to get away from school and relax in the fresh air. But relax
isn’t really the right word to use. We were worked to
the bone with brilliant challenges. These included memory,
sports, safety, strangers and germs. It was a great fun-packed
morning with a side dish of information and safety tips.
