Overview


Homework is an integral part of a child's education at Southwater Junior School. The homework set in each year group is matched to the needs of the child. The work is linked to curriculum areas and may support, reinforce or introduce work that is to be followed up in the classroom. Homework is a partnership between the child, the school and home.

This routine will allow parents to know

  • when your child usually has homework
  • how long the task should be pursued
  • when homework should be handed in

Year 3

Reading
As often as possible, minimum of twice a week with comments
Maths/Topic
This homework may link to our current topic, or to our Maths learning.
Set on Wednesday, in on following Monday
(20 - 30 minutes max.)
Occasionally we may set longer tasks over several weeks.
Spelling/Maths
This homework may involve learning facts such as spellings, or times tables.
Set on Monday, due on Friday.
Music
Recorder practice (after Autumn half term.)
Research Project
Summer Term - First half

 

Year 4

Reading

10 minutes each night or equivalent (minimum of one response per week from child with parental comment if appropriate.)

Maths

Set on Wednesday, in on following Monday (30 minutes) + tables.

Written

e.g. history; geography; English (including spelling) – day will depend on individual class timetable (usually approx. 1 week to complete) – (30 minutes).
Research Project
Spring Term - second half

 

Year 5

Reading
10 minutes each night or equivalent ( + 30 minutes weekly reading to adult - adult signs reading journal.)
Maths
Set on Friday, due in on following Wednesday ( 30 minutes.)
Written
e.g. history; geography; science; English - ( set on Monday or Tuesday and due in Friday although this is variable).
Spelling
Lists of words to learn or spelling activities - set on Thursday and tested the following Thursday
Research Project
Spring Term - second half

 

Year 6

Reading
20 minutes silent reading daily (parent asked to hear child read as often as appropriate.)
Maths
Set on Wednesday, in on following Monday (30 minutes) + tables.
English

Day will depend on individual class timetable and is often based around other subjects e.g. history, geography, science, R.E
(30 minutes)

Research Project

Independent Research Project

Once a year pupils will be asked to complete an extended Independent Research Project (lasting approximately half a term.) Details will be sent home by class teachers.

These are only for general guidance, on occasions there may be exceptions to the routines outlined above.
